Hi folks,
There are many items to update you on this week. This week’s highlights include the election, my website, HRM meetings, new crosswalk lights at the HRM roundabout on Larry Uteck, muffler noise, traffic and parking changes for Rocky Lake Elementary, and the Household Hazardous Waste Depot.
The Election
I received word this week from the HRM Clerk that nominations have closed and that I will be unopposed for re-election in Bedford-Wentworth.
I want to thank you for all your kind words, your encouragement, and your offers of support since I announced that I was re-offering. I am surprised, thrilled and also humbled. I will now get back to work on your behalf and I look forward to working with you and for you!
My Website
My campaign website will be modified and remain active. I will use it to help keep residents up to date on issues, announcements and events. My updates on social media will also be shown on my website, for those of you that do not use Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Update on meetings of Regional Council, boards and committees
Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 (Halifax, NS) – Due to COVID-19, all in-person meetings of Regional Council, boards and committees were cancelled as of March 2020 until further notice. The following is an update on the status of meetings:
All standing committee meetings are approved to return to in-person sessions. Given the size of these committees, relative to the meeting space, arrangements have been made to facilitate these meetings in-person while adhering to current public health directives.
The Appeals Standing Committee will be the first in-person meeting on Thursday, Sept. 10 at City Hall. This meeting will be open to the public and media. Note that there will be limitations on the number of attendees in order to adhere to public health directives. All those who wish to attend the meeting must register in advance by contacting the Clerk’s Office at clerks@halifax.ca no later than 4:30 p.m. the day before the meeting.
As space allows, up to two to three residents from the same household can be accommodated when attending the meeting. Appellants/property owners and municipal staff will be limited to essential representatives only. All attendees must sign-in at the front desk, sanitize, and wear a mask at all times while in the building. Physical distancing of six feet (two metres) must be maintained.
Meetings of Regional Council, the Board of Police Commissioners and community council meetings will continue to be held virtually using Microsoft Teams. Other meetings, (e.g. advisory committees, committee meetings etc.) will continue to be held via teleconference or will be rescheduled to a later date. For meetings held via teleconference, meeting minutes will be posted online as soon as possible after the conclusion of the meeting.
Rocky Lake Elementary School
An update for parents or guardians with kids attending the “new” and “temporary” elementary school on Rocky Lake Dr.
In response to your suggestions and concerns, I have received approval from HRM Traffic Services for a “school zone” speed reduction and for some parking changes on Rocky Lake Dr. They should be in place within the next couple of weeks!

Household special waste depot to reopen
Thursday, September 10, 2020 (Halifax, NS) – Effective Saturday, September 12, the Household Special Waste (HSW) depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive, Bayers Lake will reopen for regular operations. The facility was closed due to COVID-19 and budget constraints.
The HSW depot accepts chemical waste generated in your home, which is processed and disposed of safely. The depot is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except holiday weekends). Materials can only be received from those residing within the municipality. Businesses must contact a private hazardous materials handling company for disposal. Commercial waste is not accepted at the HSW depot.
As the depot reopens, the number of residents accessing the facility is expected to be high. Your patience is appreciated as staff adjust to reopening. Please follow all public health orders when visiting the depot.
For a full list of materials accepted and the updated schedule, visit: www.halifax.ca/hswdepot.
HRM Roundabout on Larry Uteck Blvd
If you walk or drive in this area, you have hopefully noticed the new flashing crosswalk lights installed at the HRM owned crosswalk. These were added to improve pedestrian safety. The other two roundabouts, closer to the 102, are owned and operated by the province.
Muffler Noise
I frequently hear from Bedford-Wentworth residents regarding noisy mufflers on cars and motorcycles. At this time, HRP are only able to issue tickets for excessive revving of engines. However, the province has passed a new Motor Vehicle Act which is to be known as the Traffic Safety Act. When its Regulations are completed and it is then Proclaimed, it will allow municipalities to bring in regulations regarding muffler noise. It will also allow municipalities to consider implementing red light cameras and photo radar.
Have a great weekend and please let me know if you have questions or ideas!
